Interview with the Founder of QUITTR

Alex Slater
Founder, QUITTR

About

QUITTR is an app designed to help you quit pornography through personalized plans, community support, and tools like a content blocker.

The 19-year-old founder, Alex Slater, built the product in 10 days and generated over $140,000 in 3 months.

In this interview, we have a conversation with Alex, the founder of QUITTR.

How did you come up with the idea for the product?

A massive trend popped up called self-improvement with one of the biggest divisions of that being NoFap. It’s a hell of a hard addiction it is to quit so I decided to build an app for it.

How did you build the product?

I built the product myself in about 10 days with SwiftUI + Firebase + Superwall.

How big was your team when you started?

Just me and my 17 year old brother. Early on I met my other co-founder called Connor who funded the initial paid-promos.

How did you launch the business?

We launched on ProductHunt initially (which flopped miserably) so we started doing a bunch of reddit growth hacking where we pushed our product in r/NoFap (the biggest subreddit in my niche) and made posts and replies on how good of a product QUITTR is and how it changed my life and helped me beat my addiction. We made approx $2.5k from Reddit organic alone before we got banned for self-promotion. That gave us a big boost of confidence to keep growing.

How have you grown the business since its launch?

We started with reddit organic and made a few thousand dollars as validation, then our co-founder (Connor) fronted $3k out of pocket to pay for Christian content creators on Instagram to advertise our app and we turned $3k->$35k. Since then, we’ve been acquiring more and more influencer promos to build awareness for our brand and are now dabbling into paid ads and scaling the best performing creatives.

What are the main marketing channels that work out for you?

Organic product positioning, Influencers, Paid ads, SEO/ASO. UGC hasn’t worked as well as we’re still trying to crack the code for that.

Which tools do you use most often to help grow your business?

Slack, ClickUp, Notion and Superwall. Honestly makes me and my team so productive and on-track it’s wonderful. You wake up with intention, know exactly what you and your team are working on, and get dopamine for crossing off tasks.

What is the business model (ads/subscription etc)?

Hard paywall, subscription based, $12.99 Monthly / $39.99 Yearly with a $20/yearly discount if you exit the paywall. Our average order value is $20.

What do your financials look like?

90% profit, 100% reinvested. The team pays ourselves nominally and based on performance so we’re laser focused on growing the business. We split 50/50 of our revenue with ads and influencers right now.
