Interview with the Founder of Pintura

What is Pintura?

Pintura is a JavaScript Image Editor that can be integrated to any other system.

In this interview, we talk to the founder, Rik Schennink.

How did you come up with the idea for the business?

After building many random products I decided to search online market place Envato for products that were successful (they show weekly sales) and I felt I could do better in the UI/UX department.

How did you build the product?

I used my existing Front-end development and design skills to code the initial version in vanilla JavaScript. The current version is built with Svelte.

How big was your team when you started?

Just me, it still is.

How did you launch the business?

I launched on Product Hunt and referenced Pintura from my open source (and free) file upload library FilePond.

How have you grown the business since its launch?

Content marketing, affiliate marketing, open source libraries like FilePond, and free utils like

What are the main marketing channels that work out for you?

SEO, open source libraries, and affiliate marketing

Which tools do you use most often to help grow your business?

I'm not that big on marketing, but mostly ahrefs and domainr to find interesting domains.

What is the business model (ads/subscription etc)?

Yearly license subscriptions based on team size. Customers get support + updates + private npm access. The Pintura license is perpetual, if a subscription expires customers can still use the Pintura version that was last released in their subscription period.

What do your finances look like?

Currently at USD 20K+ MRR, most of that is profit as I'm operating PQINA on my own and costs are low. The real number is above that, but I’m currently not comfortable showing it.
